A college registrar is in charge of maintaining accurate student records which reflect all the classes a particular student has taken and the grades received. The registration office also helps to develop course schedules and works with a variety of people in the college to do so such as faculty and department chairs. Depending on the size and structure of the organization, the registration department also handles registering students for their classes.

The registration office is also responsible for handling graduation audits which ensures a potential graduate has met all graduation requirements.

Some college registrars are also responsible for transfer credit evaluations.

The office also liaises with Admissions, Financial Aid, Counseling and Student Billing departments in order to ensure a student is able to register, prerequisites have been met and they are being correctly billed for the credits they are registered for.
