The Union's first plan for defending the South during the American Civil War was to blockade the Southern ports in order to cut off the Confederacy's access to trade and supplies. This plan, known as the Anaconda Plan, aimed to squeeze the Confederacy economically and weaken their ability to sustain their war effort. The Union also sought to gain control of the Mississippi River, which would split the Confederacy in half and limit their ability to move troops and supplies.

The Anaconda Plan, so-called (in derision) because it was aimed at slowly constricting the life out of the Confederacy by sealing the borders, blockading the ports and starving them out.

At that time, very few officers thought it was going to be a long war. (One of the few was Sherman.)
