Remember the general acid reaction eq'ns.

Acid + Alkali = Salt + Water

Acid + Base = Salt + Water

Acid + Metal = Salt +Hydrogen

Acid + Carbonate = Salt +Water + Carbon Dioxide.

So if you react hydrochloric ACID with a METAL it will produce the gas HYDROGEN.

The general rule is that when a metal and an acid react, they produce a salt and hydrogen gas. For example:

Magnesium + Hydrochloric Acid --> Magnesium Chloride + Hydrogen

Sodium + Hydrochloric Acid --> Sodium Chloride + Hydrogen
